Terms and Conditions

Conditions of Entry

The Presenter reserves the right to refuse entry or evict any ticket holder at their discretion for violation of any of these conditions:

General Information and Etiquette
  • Entry to all events requires a valid ticket. Tickets are often available at the door, but we recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment - especially if you have any access requirements as most sessions are sold as assigned seating.
  • The start time listed on your ticket is when the show will commence. Some shows will have a total lockout at this point, or only allow admission at a specific point in the show. Please be at the venue at least 10 minutes before the start time to ensure everyone has time to take their seats.
  • Some events may have additional activities such as pre-show refreshments that will begin earlier than the start time on your ticket. Check your pre-show email for details.
  • Please check the audience advice before purchasing a ticket to a show - these warnings cover any content and technical effects that may cause distress or discomfort for some people, as well as show run times and intervals, and recommended age ranges.
  • No mobile phone use during the performance as it is highly disruptive to patrons in the seats all around you and our performers. This includes; texting, checking emails, using your phone torch, playing games or checking the time. If you have an urgent situation and need to use your mobile phone, please step out into the foyer to do so.
  • No filming or photography (with or without flash) is allowed during the performance without the express permission of the presenter. You are encouraged to snap a special memory from your visit inside our auditorium before the show, at interval or once the show has finished. Many (but not all) shows may give you an opportunity to meet the performers for a photo after the show.
  • No talking during the show. We understand it is tempting to talk about something that is happening on stage with your friends or family, however talking during the performance is disruptive to other patrons and performers.
  • Entering and exiting the theatre during the show should be kept to a minimum. If you do need to exit or enter the auditorium, please do so at the end of a song when the audience is applauding, or when directed by an usher. When you return, follow the instructions of our ushers who will get you back to your seat safely and with minimum disruption.
  • Some sessions may be specifically designated as relaxed performances. During these sessions, lighting and sound levels will be more neutral, and audience members are free to move and vocalise as they need. These sessions are an important way to make the arts accessible to people of all abilities. If you would find these relaxed settings too disruptive for your own enjoyment, please select a different session or show.
  • No hats should be worn during the performance as they can cause an obstruction to the person sitting being you. If your view is obstructed by the person in front of you, see one of our ushers immediately and they will assist where possible.
  • Be aware of the personal space of those patrons sitting either side of you. Try and stay within the boundaries of your seat and do not take up both arm rests. Where possible try not to fidget and keep your feet on the floor.
  • Restless babies and children are not uncommon during a longer performance. If you find your child has become vocal or too restless to stay in their seat, please step outside into our foyer and you will be able to watch and listen to a live feed of the show until your child is settled enough to return to the auditorium.
  • Please check the age recommendation for the show prior to purchasing your tickets as some shows are not suitable for younger children.
  • Trained and registered service animals are welcome, but please take care that the animal does not become overly restless or noisy. Other animals are not permitted in the auditorium.
  • No hot food or hot drinks are allowed in the auditorium. We have a pop-up bar in our foyer for some performances that provides a wide range of refreshments suitable for the auditorium. We also allow you to bring your own pre-purchased snacks (lollies, chips, biscuits), soft drinks or refillable water bottles (not glass) to the theatre with you. Chewing gum is not permitted at any time in the auditorium.
  • There is no dress code, however we recommend smart casual as a minimum. For many a theatre visit is a special occasion. As you will be seated close to other patrons, it is polite to ensure that you are clean and presentable.
  • The theatre temperature can vary widely depending on audience numbers, ventilation and outside weather, so we recommend you have a light outer layer that's easy to take on and off. If the temperature of the theatre is extremely hot or cold, please alert one of our ushers.
  • All venues are wheelchair accessible and equipped with disabled amenities. Please visit our access page for more details.

Safety and Legal Compliance

  •  Aggression towards staff, performers, or patrons is never acceptable. Anyone displaying these behaviours will be asked to stop, and may be directed to leave. Our staff may call the police for assistance if the aggressive person refuses to leave when asked, or if we believe they present a possible danger to anyone present.
  • The Portland Arts Centre practices responsible service of alcohol. Intoxicated patrons, or those under the influence of drugs or alcohol may be denied entry.
  • Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited throughout all our venues, as well as within 4 metres of any door, opening window, ventilation fans, or any undercover outdoor structures.
  • Recording devices are not allowed, except for hand-held digital cameras or phones with non-removable lenses. Professional cameras or audio recording equipment require prior authorization from the Presenter.
  • Except as provided by law, neither the Presenter nor the venue owner/lessee will be liable for any loss, injury, or damage sustained at the venue, whether caused by negligence or otherwise.
  • Follow all official instructions from emergency services or venue staff in the event of an emergency evacuation or situation.
  • If you believe your safety or that of others is at risk, contact the nearest staff member. First Aid Officers are available on-site.
