Portland Arts Centre is proud to partner with Glenelg Libraries - Libraries after Dark to present Underscore in the Portland Library.
UNDERSCORE is a genre-defying musical and literary experience, where acclaimed writers Jane Clifton and Wayne Macauley take to the stage, reading excerpts of their work over a lush electro-acoustic soundscape crafted by Sally Ford & The Idiomatics.

The show is a seamless blend of narrative and melody as the live readings are bookended by songs from the band, featuring Ford’s wryly-observed lyrics of life, love and the human experience. The musicians bring a rich palette of keyboards, synths, cello, trombone, sax and flute to create a truly unique sonic backdrop for the writers’ performance.

Launched at the 2023 Adelaide Cabaret Festival to hugely enthusiastic audiences, UNDERSCORE has since been presented at the Brunswick Ballroom, Malthouse Outdoor Stage, Archies Creek Hotel, Clunes Booktown, Athenaeum Library, Reading’s 50th Anniversary and Beleura House.

An entrancing fusion of literature and live music.

"There’s a special kind of intimacy here. A superbly focused and talented band with the unique combination of traditional and modern instruments (and musical styles) cradling each piece and giving it different shapes and textures.” Stage Whispers, June 2023
