This year's program will be led by the amazing Christy and Luke from Asking for Trouble Physical Theatre!

What is physical theatre?
Physical theatre can include a lot of different things, like circus, dance, clowning, and experimental performance. It can be funny, serious, scary, or all of the above - the main feature is simply that the story is told more by body movements than by words.

What is THEATREPALOOZA?
It's the Portland Arts Centre's annual performing arts holiday program for ages 12 -25. Spread across two days, participants get to work with professional theatre makers to learn new skills, and collaborate to create a performance to share with family and friends on the second evening at the Portland Arts Centre.
No experience necessary – everybody is welcome!

'Creating collaboratively’ - What will the process look like?
We will be sharing a range of ways to create physical theatre and performance material through play (it will be fun!). We are super open to offers and we’ll encourage you to contribute your ideas and skills. You’ll leave the process with a bunch of tools to create your own performance material in the future.

What is important in the process of working together?
  • Collaboration - We will offer group exercises to develop a sense of connection to self and to others
  • Support - We create spaces where people feel empowered to be courageous
  • Play - We use playfulness to engage people to create without perfectionism leading to unexpected and original ideas along with a lot of FUN!
  • Reflection - We work together with participants to develop a shared artistic language, observing what what we notice and enjoy as individuals
  • Challenge - We will work physically to redefine what people think they are capable of we will move our bodies, laugh, connect with each other and try new things
