Perfume in the 1700s: A trendy must-have

An NGV Kids on Tour Program

In the 1700s, perfume became a major trend in Europe. Lighter, floral scents replaced the heavy aromatics people once used to hide bad smells. Perfume bottles, made from expensive materials like glass, porcelain, and silver, became fashion items too. This tiny scent bottle by the English company Wedgwood is decorated with raised Classical (ancient Greek or Roman) designs and has a silver lid with a jasperware stopper. Its small size was designed to be carried in the owner’s pocket. Back then, a stylish perfume bottle wasn’t just practical – it showed you had great style.

Using an National Gallery of Victoria template, get creative and colour or collage your very own, unique perfume bottle design!

Suitable for participants aged 8 upwards. Free workshop but bookings are essential.
